During January 20-22nd, 2012 a camp was held on Kannah Creek in the Grand Mesa National Forest. Present were Vic Barkin, Tom Chalmers, Steve Chin, Darko, Bill Gantic, Gabe Hanratty, and Tom Karnuta. Steve provided two horses and a mule to pack in gear, plus Gabe packed in with his two dogs with travois. Camp was set up in some pinion and cedar trees. The weather had warmed up the past week so we were able to find some ground that was clear of snow for the camp site. Camp consisted of a fire surrounded by lean-tos, with the exception of Bill G. who just threw his buffalo robe on the ground. On Friday we put on a pot of beans and hung a leg of goat over the fire to cook. By sundown the outer edges of the goat were cooked and we took turns cutting pieces off of it to eat while it continued to cook over the fire. The beans never did get completely cooked that night but the meal was good none the less. The goat was as fine a meat as I have ever had. Saturday morning, Vic cooked up some peach cobbler, Bill G. cooked up some blue corn meal, and Gabe made a pot of oatmeal. As usual Darko supplied some fine sausage for us. Tom K. arrived in camp about mid-morning and some of the boys went out on a scout. In the afternoon we made the official change in Booshway as Tom K. took over the reins from Bill G. Supper tonight was a pot of stew with a little of everything in it and it tasted great. Sunday morning we woke to about six inches of new snow. The weather was still mild and everyone fared well through the night. After a leisurely breakfast, we broke camp and loaded the horses for the trip out.
